Wearable sensors for early seizure detection in children with epilepsy

  • Children with epilepsy (n=99) were longitudinally tracked while wearing a wristband that allowed quantification of physiological factors such as heart rate, stress response prior to and during seizure onset.
  • Physiological and activity profiles that were associated with seizure onset were identified for each sex and age group.
  • The authors concluded that wearable technology was able to detect subtle seizures not visible to the human eye prior to clinical seizure onset. Early seizure detection and treatment may reduce seizure length and risk of injury during seizure by alerting caregivers.
