Takeaway
The 6-item Identify Chronic Migraine screener (ID-CM[6]) had an acceptable sensitivity of 70.8% and good specificity of 93.2% as a screening tool for chronic migraine when compared to the diagnostic gold standard.
Why this matters
Chronic migraine is frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated, resulting in a high disease burden on the individual. Key barriers to achieving optimal care occur in the processes of seeking care, receiving an accurate diagnosis and receiving an individualized treatment plan; only 4.5% of patients receive all three aspects of care.
The 12-item Identify Chronic Migraine screener (ID-CM[12]) was recently published as a tool for efficiently identifying people with undiagnosed chronic migraine. However, a shorter tool would be more useful in the clinical setting to be implemented by health-care professionals either with or without specialization in headache, neurology or pain.
