Understanding the incidence of developmental and intellectual disability in childhood epilepsy
In a cohort of children with developmental impairment and epilepsy (n=235), the cumulative incidence of developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) was 169 per 100,000 children (0.00169%). The cumulative incidence of intellectual disability and epilepsy (ID+E) was 125 per 100,000 children (0.00125%).
The authors concluded that knowledge of the incidence of DEEs and ID+E will enable more accurate care and community resourcing due to the significant personal and healthcare challenges associated with DEE and ID+E.
