The role of arterial blood gas parameters on the progression of disease in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Arterial blood gas (ABG) parameters including bicarbonates (HCO3-), oxygen partial pressure (pO2), carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2), base excess (BE), oxygen saturation, and oxyhemoglobin were evaluated to determine the potential correlation with forced vital capacity (FVC).
All ABG parameters investigated were significantly correlated with FVC in patients with spinal or bulbar onset and predicted the survival of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Authors concluded that ABG analysis could be used an alternative to FVC in cases where spirometry cannot be performed.
