The link between alcohol consumption and dementia: evidence from a longitudinal Korean cohort
Excessive alcohol consumption may have a detrimental effect on the brain and cause neurologic impairments over time. Previous studies linked heavy alcohol consumption to increased risk of dementia, but how varying levels of alcohol may alter these risks is unclear.
Nearly 4 million Korean participants were followed over a median of 6.3 years. An increased risk for all-cause dementia was associated with sustained heavy drinking (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.08), whilst reducing alcohol intake from a heavy to a moderate (aHR, 0.92) and mild (aHR, 0.93) levels lowered the risk of all-cause dementia.
According to the authors, increased alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing all-cause dementia.
