New genetic markers linked to dementia development in PD identified

A genome-wide meta-analysis has identified new genetic markers associated with faster progression of dementia in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

While PD is primarily a motor disorder, cognitive impairment and dementia can occur, particularly in late stages of the disease, the researchers noted. However, they added: “The rate of cognitive decline varies widely among PD patients, and the genetic basis for this heterogeneity is incompletely understood.”
