Takeaway
People with chronic low back pain (LBP) receiving person-specific motor skill training (MST) to change functional activity performance had better short- and long-term improvements in function than those who had strength and flexibility exercise (SFE).
Why this matters
There is currently no optimal non-pharmacological management of chronic LBP, which is the most prevalent chronic pain condition in adults. Although exercise is recommended, limited efficacy evidence is available and long-term effects of such exercises is scarce.
LBP has a large detrimental effect on function, so a potential exercise-based treatment should focus on person-specific training to improve performance of functional activities.
