Mild sleep restriction affects metabolic as well as neurobehavioral processes in adolescents

  • Sleep-restricted adolescents with a split sleep routine including a nap had better neurobehavioral outcomes than those with continuous nocturnal sleep of the same total duration, however this was associated with a negative impact on glucose levels.

Why this matters

  • Given the metabolic and behavioral consequences of sleep restriction, adolescents should be encouraged to have the recommended hours of nocturnal sleep.
