Markers of coagulation and fibrinolysis can predict outcomes of traumatic brain injury


  • Fibrinolysis marker D-dimer and fibrinolysis inhibition marker plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) demonstrate potential as early predictors of poor outcome in patients post-traumatic brain injury.

Why this matters

  • Post-traumatic brain injury, hyperfibrinolysis, and coagulation issues can lead to hemorrhage, which in turn negatively impacts patients’ mortality and outcome. There is limited understanding regarding how fibrinolysis shutdown can affect this process.

  • Prompt identification of patients who are at higher risk of poor prognosis could facilitate early intervention and tailored treatment.
