Investigation of hemicraniectomy with hypothermia for malignant middle cerebral artery stroke

  • In patients with malignant middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke, moderate therapeutic hypothermia did not yield anticipated improvement over hemicraniectomy alone and resulted in safety signals that led to study termination.

Why this matters

  • The results of this study are contrary to studies that suggest a possible benefit of therapeutic hypothermia in this setting and indicate that further investigation is required before this is recommended in patients.
