Immune dysregulation, cognitive impairment, and severe mental illness – what’s the link?

Activation of innate immunity was associated with poor verbal learning and psychomotor processing. Canonical covariate analysis comparing individuals with severe mental illness with healthy controls suggests that this process is exaggerated in severe mental illness.
In the healthy control group, hierarchical subtyping identified a high cognition─low immune dysregulation subgroup. In the severe mental illness group, the opposite – low cognition─high immune dysregulation was identified.
The authors concluded their data supports the presence of a link between immune dysregulation and cognitive impairment in severe mental illness.
