Experts reach consensus on individualized treatment for migraine

  • Using a three-round modified Delphi process, a panel of 19 migraine experts has issued consensus statements on the main factors headache specialists consider when making treatment decisions for people with migraine.
  • Using ratings of 0 (highly unlikely) to 100 (highly likely), the experts strongly agreed on definitions for acute (median rating =100) and preventive (median =90) treatment, and on the need for customized treatment for individual patients (median =100).
  • The panel also agreed on the importance of a treatment category referred to as “situational prevention” for people with reliable migraine triggers (median =100), given the availability of suitable new treatment options and the ability to identify people who may benefit.
