Diagnosing dementia in patients with illiteracy or low education level: current challenges and tools

In a plenary session at AAIC 2021, Professor Ricardo Nitrini of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, discussed challenges in the diagnosis of dementia in illiterate/low education (I/LE) individuals.

I/LE is a risk factor for dementia, said Prof. Nitrini. In a study conducted across six Latin American countries, the prevalence of dementia was significantly higher in illiterate than literate individuals (15.7% versus 7.2%; P<0.0001).
