Clinical intervention targets for hospitalized persons with dementia at risk of delirium

Mediation analyses of data from 455 persons with dementia were conducted to determine the relationship between cognitive and physical function, pain, medications and restraints, and their indirect effect on delirium severity.
Antipsychotic use, low physical function, and significant cognitive impairment were identified as potential clinical intervention targets due to their apparent partial mediation of the relationship between delirium severity and behavioral symptoms.
