Biomarkers of white matter damage in primary progressive multiple sclerosis

  • Of the white matter tract integrity (WMTI) metrics analyzed, axonal water fraction (AWF) appeared to be the most sensitive marker of white matter (WM) tissue damage, i.e. progressive axonal loss, in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

Why this matters

  • This study supports the role of WMTI metrics as specific WM pathologic markers, thus enabling improved characterization of normal appearing WM and treatment of patients with PPMS.
