Association between retinopathy and risk of dementia

Takeaway

  • Retinopathy and generalised arteriolar narrowing were positively associated with all-cause dementia, and to cerebrovascular, but not Alzheimer’s-related, aetiology.

Why this matters

The contribution of microvasculature damage to dementia may be underestimated due to limitations of in vivo brain imaging, however, retinal signs may be a surrogate marker for dementia risk.
