Apolipoprotein E alleles have diverging influences on cerebral small vessel disease markers in intracerebral hemorrhage

  • In a well-phenotyped intracerebral hemorrhage cohort, Apolipoprotein E alleles ε2 and ε4 are independently linked with lobar hemorrhage and selectively associated with finger-like projections.

Why this matters

  • Although the association between Apolipoprotein E alleles and intracerebral hemorrhage is recognized, there is a lack of data on the link between intracerebral hemorrhage and neuroimaging markers of the underlying small vessel disease type and severity.

  • This unique study indicates that Apolipoprotein E alleles have distinct effects on neuroimaging biomarkers of cerebral amyloid angiopathy-associated intracerebral hemorrhage which could have significant impacts on prevention and management.
